Butterbox Canyon April 2009 : It was touch and go with the weather. The rain overnight had been light and looked like it would continue to be light so we decide to proceed and move quickly through the canyon. The main waterfall is spectacular and with the higher water level it looks intimidating to abseil through. Our 60m rope jammed solid on the bottom chock stone and after half an hour of Darren attempting to prussic back through the water fall we have to abandon it! The climb out is almost as spectacular as the canyon itself with a short easy grade exposed rock climb to add to the fun. We head back to Darren's parents place for a baked lamb dinner (yum!) before dropping everyone at the airport to return to Brisbane.

Arabanoo Canyon April 2009 : Arabanoo is our adventure canyon for the weekend. None of us have been there before. It is typical of Kanangra canyons - big, wide open abseils with the potential to stay dry if you try hard enough, but sometimes it's just easier to get wet. Because of its abundance, we think "Stinging Nettle" is a good alternative name for the canyon. Leeches are out in force today too.

A spectacular three wire bridge on the way up to centre pass. One of my favourite photos.

The cloud and rain clears a little to reveal Centre Pass! It wasn't long after this picture that it started hailing on us! The extreme weather really hightened the experience.

Looking back towards the Mackinnon Monument. It is starting to clear so I'm taking pictures every 10 steps in case it clouds in again.

(Photo: Darren Smith) Deniki - where we had lunch on the first day. This is the view looking back towards Kokoda. The air strip can be seen in the distance. Deniki is where the Australians first retreated after the Japanese overran Kokoda. There's no village here now but some guest houses are being built. Construction of guest houses is a common sight along the trail. It is obviously a good source of income for the locals.

Our campsite at Ofi Creek. Once again we have to share it with a large tour group heading in the other direction. We chat with some of them - they're all Australian. You can tell that some are a little stressed by what lies ahead and whether they'll be able to make it. Some are nice and pleasant, others are loud and garish and think they know everything.
