We camp at the start of the King Pin fire trail where the temperature dropped to -1°C overnight! We're already 10 minutes behind our scheduled departure time of 07:00.

07:15 We're off heading to Mount Thurat.

08:25 We've passed Mount Thurat and heading for Burra Gunama Ridge.

09:20 We've reached the top of the falls ahead of time thanks to Rich's nav. It's time for some morning tea.

09:45 We've scrambled around the first abseil and Tom starts the second.

09:50 Rachel descends the second abseil while Tom is setting up the third.

10:00 Rich abseils the third while I head off to set up the fourth.

10:10 Rich descends the fourth abseil through the scrub.

10:20 We're on top of the main falls! Magnificent views to Gabes Gap (centre) and Mount Cloudmaker (left).

10:35 We elected to descend the main falls on the right. After a steep scramble Rich sets up the fifth abseil.

10:45 Rachel is the last down the fifth abseil. Here you have to swing over to the ledge I'm standing on above a 70m drop.

10:55 Tom descends on the sixth abseil.

11:15 Rich and Tom set up the seventh abseil on a small, slopey, scrubby ledge. This is the upper ledge the 7 Newcastle University Mountaineering Club members bivvied on that tragic night in June 2000.

11:30 Rachel descends the sixth abseil.

12:10 Rachel finishes the seventh abseil. We're now at the bottom of the main falls. There's 6 more smaller abseils to go but it's time for lunch!

13:20 Tom descends a wetter abseil.

14:15 Rich descends a short abseil.

15:20 Rich descends the last big abseil. This is the wettest abseil of the lot.

15:25 Tom pulls the rope while Rich moves away from the spray.

19:20 Relaxed and comfy at our campsite on Kanangra Creek. We reached it at 16:30, right on time with plenty of daylight to erect tents and search for firewood.

We sleep in until 07:40 and start a leisurely breakfast.

Rich tries to dry his undies with the fire.
